Foods that help to get rid of Bad Breath


Who likes to be ignored because of bad breath? No one ever wants to be embarrassed because of bad breath or halitosis. It can be a result of various things, but bad oral hygiene is one of the major causes of bad breath.

Besides maintaining regular oral hygiene, it is recommended to include these food items in your diet to fight Halitosis:-

  • Fresh Vegetables:

Crispy vegetables, such as carrots and celery stimulates the flow of saliva maintaining the the moisture in your mouth. The fibrous texture of these veggies helps to wash off bacteria and food stuffs clinging to the gums. This action of cleansing prevents bad breath.

  • Apple:

Having an apple not only keeps doctors away but also prevents bad breath. The solid texture of apple gets rid of unnecessary plaque. Also the fruit’s juices mix with the saliva providing moisture to your dry mouth at the same time removing bacteria.

  • Dairy foods:

Who doesn’t love dairy foods? Isn’t it? Here is another reason to say yes to dairy products. Yes, you heard it right, dairy foods help to fight Halitosis. Daily having yoghurt without sugar aids in condensing stinking compounds that result in bad breath. Yoghurt also reduces gingivitis and plaque.

  • Cinnamon:

Chew cinnamon sticks or take a sip of tasty Cinnamon tea, be it in any form, the spice covers up smell in the mouth. The strong fragrance of Cinnamon enhances the mouth with pleasant flavour and destroys odour-causing bacteria.

  • Citrus fruits:

Fruits, such as strawberries and lemons rich in Vitamin C help to combat bad breath. These fruits are juicy and quickly hydrate your mouth imparting Vitamin C to mouth. Berries, melons and other citrus fruits which are rich in Vitamin C prevent the breeding of germs.

  • Drink plenty of Water

Drinking plenty of water during the day and in between meals serves as an excellent way to prevent oral dryness. Water also works like artificial saliva thereby helping to wash away the food residues in your mouth and refreshes it. Hence make it a point to consume at least 2 to 3 litres of water in a day. If you feel bloated then replace water with soups and fruit juices.

  • Tea

Black and Green tea work works wonders in combating bad breath. They prevent the development of unpleasant smell causing bacteria and as well as tooth decay. Nevertheless make sure tea is taken in moderation, as it contains caffeine, which is not good for health.
