Why do we lose hair?

Hair loss as an issue is something that each one of us is going through. It is appalling to lose so many hair strands after every shower. I know most of you must be wondering if it is normal to lose hair on daily basis.

Yes, it is normal to lose around 100 strands of hair every day. But, how is one going to keep a note on the amount of hair lost. It can be 100, less than that or even more than that. Hair fall is a natural process which takes place in every human. It is a part of your body’s growth process. Every individual hair strand goes through the Hair Growth Cycle, which has 3 phases.

  • The Growth Phase
  • The Transitional phase
  • The Resting Phase

The Growth Phase varies from 2 to 6 years.  About 85% of your hair strands are in the growth phase consecutively. An individual’s hair grows just about 10cm every year.

Once the Growth Phase comes to an end your hair moves in to the transitional phase, which lasts for around one to two weeks.  During this phase your hair follicles begin to shrink to around 1/6 of its normal length. The lower part of your hair is damaged by this time.

Then comes the resting phase, which is generally a very short one lasting for 5-6 weeks. In this phase hair strands don’t grow but stay attached to the hair follicle. Around 10 to 15 % of all your hair go into the resting phase at one time.

As the resting phase comes to an end, your hair follicle again enters to the growth phase. New hair strand begins to form and pushes the old hair which hasn’t shed by now. Thus your hair keeps on following this cycle which is totally normal.

However, if your notice abnormal loss of your hair then you need to take special care of your hair in that case to ensure that everything is right with your body and scalp. To have healthy and shiny mane you need to take balanced diet with more of proteins as they promote healthy growth of your hair.
